Restoring Our Family Farm & Rewilding The Old Orchards
Since the 3rd generation of the family took stewardship of Leggs in 2018, we’ve planted over 600 new trees on the farm, with 100 native Oaks planted in 2020, 250 young fruit trees in the orchard and 300+ natives trees across the farm and woodlands. As well as creating wildlife ponds, expanding the size of the native hedgerows, creating 14 acres of native wild flower meadows (which now host wild and rare orchids) and 7 acres dedicated to re-wilding. We have installed wild bee hives, with deer, bats, owls, birds of prey, reptiles and many other native wild animals now present, all in parallel with the wild Leggs Orchard, growing the highest quality fruits amongst nature.
The Leggs orchards were first planted in 1950, since 2018, we’ve started to re-establish the old orchards with many varieties of rare heirloom fruit trees. The majority of the new trees are apple varieties, with the rarest being grafted from the original stock. In addition we’ve planted many different varieties of pears, cherries, plums, apricots and figs. All are hand pressed and fermented on Leggs, slowly creating premium aged Ciders and Perrys. Currently aging in English oak barrels.
The soil tests have been completed, the terroir is perfect and the first grape vines have been planted. We're currently focusing on two varieties, with many more varieties to be planted very soon. This will be the first time Leggs has produced a wine and we can't wait for the first harvest.
